Boot Camp Highlights

FLY Boot Camp 2010 focused on holding on to truths and letting go of lies. Ninety-five teens and adults from six states gathered July 5-9 at the Association Retreat Center for "The Trail of Truth".

The truth of a personal faith in Jesus and the priority of His Word were central. Evening speakers were AFLC Schools faculty member Pastor Bob Lee, AFLTS Intern Jason Gudim, UND Law Student Stephen Larson, and AFLC Director of Youth Ministries Pastor Jason Holt. The messages pointed to our sin and God’s grace, to being diligent in God’s Word, to the deity of Christ, to the reliability of the Bible, and to the freedom in Jesus.

Teens were invited to pray and to invest with friends with the goal of introducing Christ to them. Pastor Jim Rasmussen, AFLC Director of Evangelism, trained those in attendance in the "Friend to Friend" plan. The teens gathered in guided small groups called "Hiking Groups" to process and pray for their involvement in the lives of those around them that do not know Christ. Each church represented was sent home with a "Friend to Friend" training kit to support the evangelistic effort in the local congregation.

At the same time, lies about evolution and naturalistic thinking were uncovered by the evidence from the Lord in creation. Mr. Wayne Stender, Director of Student Affairs at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, facilitated the TrueU video series from Focus on the Family. The ten sessions address an academic argument for the existence of God from examination of biology, cosmology, and physics. Hiking Groups were used after each session to consider the content.

Laughter was the schedule for the afternoon with Hiking Group Challenges each day of "The Race", "The Skit", and "The Relays". Spontaneous sports tournaments developed during the open rec times, while the tower slip-n-slide and the new ARC water slide were used effectively.

The morning and evening prayer times were a highlight for many as teens brought their lives, their friends, and their churches before the throne of grace. Thursday evening’s teen-led campfire was filled with testimonies of God’s faithfulness in a painful world.

The trail of truth leads us all to Jesus.
