SELF-CONTROL OF MY TONGUE PART 2
C. Lying tongue
1. Psalm 63:11 tells us that the mouth of those who speak lies shall be stopped
2. Proverbs 19:9 tells us a false witness will be punished and a liar will perish.
3. a. Matthew 5:11 here Jesus said that we are blessed when men say all manner of evil against us falsely.
b. Example – Acts 5:1-10-Ananias and Sapphira. The lied to Peter about how much they had received for a possession they had sold. Both died immediately after lying to Peter.
4. Revelation 21:8 the result of a lying tongue is that all liars shall have their part in the lake which will burn with fire and sulfur.
D. Cursing tongue
1. Leviticus 19:12 tells us that we shall not swear by God’s name falsely or profane the name of God.
2. Colossians 3:8 admonishes us to put off all filthy communication out of our mouth.
3. James 3:10 tells us that both blessing and cursing come from the same mouth. This should not be.
4. No, the use of slang is never proper. It seems that today there are so many Christians who are careless in this area. Slang should have no place in a Christians talk. Let us, with God’s help, not be guilty of profaning our Lord or His creation.
James 1:26 “If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.” (ESV)
Proverbs 12:13-19
• An evil man is trapped by his sinful talk-a righteous man escapes trouble.
• The way of a fool seems right to him-a wise man listens to advice.
• A fool shows annoyance at once-a prudent man overlooks an insult.
• A ruthful witness gives honest testimony-a false witness tells lies.
• Reckless words pierce like a sword-the tongue of the wise brings healing.
• Truthful lips endure forever-a lying tongue lasts only a moment.
James 3:2 “For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.” (ESV)
What are we to use our tongue for?
a. Ephesians 4:29 tells us we are to use our tongues to edify and minister grace to the hearers.
b. Ephesians 5:4 tells us we are to use our tongues for the giving of thanks.
Inner attitudes-Psalm 26:2 Here David says, “Examine me, O Lord, and prove me; try my mind and my heart.” (NKJV)
SELF-CONTROL OF MY WILL
3. Will.
a. Genesis 1:26-27 tells us that God created man in His own image thus endowing man with a will of his own.
b. Luke 22:42 Christ’s prayer was that not his will but the Father’s be done.
Example-Acts 24:25 This example is of a man who followed his own will is Felix as he listened to Paul but refused to yield his will to the prompting of the Holy Spirit.
c. Philippians 2:13 Our prayer regarding our will should be that we allow God to work within us, giving us the will and the power to achieve His purpose.
SELF-CONTROL OF MY BODY Part 1
My entire body:
1. Appetites-Physical:
a. Right reason for hunger-Proverbs 16:26 tells us that hunger is good because it causes us to work to satisfy it.
b. Warnings against-Proverbs 23:1-3 warns us that we should not allow our love for food to place ourselves in a position where we can be bribed. Verses 19-21a warns that gluttonous eaters will come to poverty.
c. Christ’s admonition-Luke 12:22 Christ admonishes us not to be anxious about what we shall eat. If God gives and keeps up the greater, the life, the body, will He withhold the less, food to sustain life? Of course, He will not.
d. Drunkenness-Proverbs 20:1 tells us “wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.” (NKJV)
e. Result-Proverbs 23:21 tells us that the result of drunkenness is poverty.
SELF-CONTROL OF MY BODY Part 2
2. Desires:
a. Exodus 20:17 tells us that we should never covet anything that is our neighbors, rather we
should rejoice in his success and help him keep his own. This is quite different from the
world’s philosophy of trying to keep up with the Jones’.
b. Having money is not wrong, but when that becomes our main desire and the love of our
life it is wrong.
c Ecclesiastes 5:10 tells us that such a person will never be satisfied. This is vanity.
d. Proverbs 10:3 tells us that the Lord will not allow the riches of the wicked to continue forever.
e. Luke 12:16-21 Here we find the parable of the rich fool. Here we see the folly of only desiring worldly treasurers and not being concerned with spiritual treasurers. The rich man was only concerned for himself-and he was going to tear down his barns and build larger ones in which to store his crops. He had material security and was going to enjoy life. However, God intervened and required his soul that night. Weren’t there any poor and hungry?
f. Proverbs 20:4 and 13 we read about those who are lazy and have no desire to take care of themselves. It tells us that he shall begin harvest and have nothing and come to poverty.
SELF-CONTROL OF MY BODY Part 3
3. Desires for love:
a. Brother love-Psalm 133:1-3 Here it tells us that it is good and pleasant for brethren to dwell together in unity. It is compared to the precious ointment upon the head that ran down Aaron’s beard and down the skirts of his garments this oil was olive oil mixed with four of the best spices. Its rich profusion typified the abundance of the Spirit’s graces. As the dew, such as fell on Hermon, falls in fertilizing power on the mountains of Zion, so this unity is fruitful in good works.
b. Between man and woman-Song of Solomon 8:6-7 tells us that this love is strong as death, many waters cannot quench it, neither can the flood drown it. It is worth more than all the substance of a man’s house. Oh, that men and women would consider love as precious today.
c. Husband and wife-Genesis 24:6-7 Here we see the beautiful picture of Isaac taking Rebekah as his wife, and then these words, “and he loved her.” This love is described this way in Ephesians 5:28 “In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.” (ESV)
d. Hebrews 13:4 gives this warning, “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.” (ESV)
e. Lustful desires-examples: 2 Samuel 11:2-4 Here we find the story of David’s great sin. David yielded to his lustful desires for Bathsheba. However, it did not stop with this sin, but David was responsible for the death of Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband. The results of sin are often far reaching as we find in 2 Samuel 12:11-14. David’s loss of character by the discovery of his crime, tended to diminish the respect of his family, to weaken the authority of his government, and to encourage the growth of disorders throughout his kingdom.
Matthew 5:28 tells us that whosoever looks on a woman with a lustful eye, has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
f. Admonitions against-Colossians 3:5-7 admonishes us to put these lustful desires to death or the holy anger of God will fall upon us.
Proverbs 6:25 admonishes us not to lust for their beauty, or let their coyness seduce us.
g. Psalm 112:10 tells us that the desire of the wicked shall perish.
h. Galatians 5:24 tells us that if we belong to Christ we must crucify this sinful nature with its passions and desires.
i. 1. Psalm 145:1 tells that God will open his hand and satisfy our desires.
2. Romans 13:14 tells us to put on the Lord Jesus Christ.
3. Galatians 5:16-18 tells us to walk in the Spirit and to be led by the Spirit.
